Storing your Medals

Storing your medals correctly is the easiest and most effective way of preserving them.

The best thing you can do is to keep your medals clean and dry, away from extremes of temperature, humidity and light. The metal of medals can corrode from dampness, and the fabric can rot. High temperatures and a very dry environment make fabric brittle and weak.

Medals are best stored in their original boxes for single medals or a Military Medal Box for multiple mounted medals. The acid free felt lining and quality hand crafted leather covered box will keep your medals dry and dark, alternatively boxes made of hoop pine plywood or acid-free cardboard will do the job. Other wood (including woods often used to make cabinets for coins and medals, such as mahogany, chipboard and ordinary plywood) and ordinary cardboard are acidic, and can harm metals and fabrics.
Handle the medals as little as possible, as acid from your fingers or sweat can harm them.

We recommend wiping your medals with a soft cotton undyed cloth after handling them.
